Fakespot shut down on July 1, 2025. If you relied on it before buying something online, you already know the problem it was solving. Online reviews are not always trustworthy, and it is hard to know what to believe.

SeekShop approaches that problem differently. Instead of grading whether reviews look suspicious, it pulls opinions from Reddit, YouTube, retailer pages, and expert sources and gives you a single honest score on any product.

What Fakespot Did

Fakespot analyzed reviews on retailer sites like Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Sephora using AI to detect patterns associated with fake or incentivized reviews. It assigned a letter grade from A to F based on how trustworthy the review pool looked, and also showed an adjusted star rating with suspected fake reviews removed.

It was genuinely useful. The letter grade gave shoppers a quick gut-check, and for products with obvious review manipulation it worked well.

But it had real limitations that frustrated a lot of users:

  • Most importantly, it only told you whether reviews looked suspicious on that retailer’s page. It could not tell you what people on Reddit actually thought, or what YouTube reviewers found after months of real use.
  • The grading was a black box. No transparency into why a product got a certain grade.
  • False positives were a documented problem. Sellers with legitimate reviews regularly received D and F grades with no recourse.
  • The same product in different colors could receive completely different grades despite sharing the same reviews.

What SeekShop Does

SeekShop pulls reviews from Reddit, YouTube, retailer pages, and expert sources and rolls them into a SmartScore, a weighted rating that reflects what people across the web actually think, not just what one retailer’s product page shows.

Instead of asking “are these Amazon reviews real?”, SeekShop asks “what does the whole internet think?” That’s a harder question to game.

Every product analysis includes:

  • A SmartScore – an AI-weighted rating based on real user experience from across the web
  • A sentiment breakdown (e.g. “88% positive based on reviews across Reddit, YouTube, retailer pages, and expert sources”)
  • What customers consistently praise
  • The main criticism or caveat
  • A trust signal when review coverage is thin or suspiciously one-sided
  • A plain-English Takeaway so you know exactly who the product is and isn’t for

How They Answer Different Questions

Fakespot answered: “Can I trust these reviews?”

SeekShop answers: “What do people actually think about this product across the web?”

Those are related but different questions. A product can pass a fake review check and still have a rough reputation on Reddit. It can look great on a retailer page and get picked apart by YouTube reviewers after months of real use. Fakespot could not surface that. SeekShop can.

It is not a fake review detector. It is a fuller, more honest picture of what real buyers think – pulled from sources that are much harder to game than any single retailer’s review section.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SeekShop free? Yes, completely free. No account needed.

Does it work on Amazon? Yes, and on hundreds of other stores. Paste any product URL or browse with the extension.

Does SeekShop detect fake reviews? Not exactly, and that is intentional. Rather than grading individual reviews for authenticity, SeekShop pulls from Reddit, YouTube, retailer pages, and expert sources alongside retailer reviews. A product propped up by fake retailer reviews tends to look very different once Reddit and YouTube are factored in.

What happened to Fakespot? Mozilla, which acquired Fakespot in 2023, shut it down on July 1, 2025 as part of a broader refocus on Firefox.

How is the SmartScore calculated? It is an AI-weighted score based on sentiment across multiple platforms. Reviews from independent sources like Reddit and YouTube are weighted alongside retailer reviews and expert opinions to produce a single rating.

Is SeekShop a direct replacement for Fakespot? Not exactly. Fakespot graded review authenticity. SeekShop aggregates sentiment from across the web to tell you what people actually think about a product. If you want to know whether a product is worth buying, SeekShop gives you a broader and more complete picture than a fake review grade alone.
