What Fakespot Did
Fakespot analyzed reviews on retailer sites like Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Sephora using AI to detect patterns associated with fake or incentivized reviews. It assigned a letter grade from A to F based on how trustworthy the review pool looked, and also showed an adjusted star rating with suspected fake reviews removed.
It was genuinely useful. The letter grade gave shoppers a quick gut-check, and for products with obvious review manipulation it worked well.
But it had real limitations that frustrated a lot of users:
- Most importantly, it only told you whether reviews looked suspicious on that retailer’s page. It could not tell you what people on Reddit actually thought, or what YouTube reviewers found after months of real use.
- The grading was a black box. No transparency into why a product got a certain grade.
- False positives were a documented problem. Sellers with legitimate reviews regularly received D and F grades with no recourse.
- The same product in different colors could receive completely different grades despite sharing the same reviews.
What SeekShop Does
